I was so excited when I got my Canon Vixia …. about a year ago this time last year …
until I applied a mts file to my AE timeline and had to count to10 when scrolled the video … waiting for the display to catch up with me.
Nvidia’s marriage with Adobe in particular with Mercury Engine ( MPE ) in Premiere Pro changed this. Hidef was endowed with real time editing with this one addition to your system but
now that I have my first Windows 7 experience it is a real pleasure to see an mts file with a representative thumbnails,
to open it directly from the folder display, or to be able to play from the folder simply using Windows media.
These are ‘little things’ but make a tremendous contribution to your time when working with hi def, sampling and doing a little experimentation.
When a new features or capacity appears … I can turn into a child with fascination/infatuation. And when it comes to Premiere Pro, it’s being able to edit hi def video for the first time – in real time without moving through the timeline, then waiting for the image to catch up with you.
There’s a nice table showing what memory capabilities windows os’s have that is useful for me making my next decisions. In addition to Mercury, Cuda, simply having as much memory as your operating system can handle is the next very simple stroke and this table makes it quite clear Windows memory
I’ve also had some fun experimenting with Sorenson Squeeze – real time editing and realistic rendering is a great step but these hi def files still need all the help they can get and many believe Sorenson still leads the parade when it comes to compression. If your destination is Web viewing, feed it mpeg4 and experiment with the Squeeze settings. Like many rendering tools today (Badaboom is great from Nvidia), Sorenson has options for publishing directly to YouTube, Akamai, Limelight, and Twitter.
I’ve been looking forward to the release, doing my homework, looking at specific features that address my special interests. Big splash, big party, big news, great reviews, and
hey, it’s time for the shipments to go out.
And Tennessee get’s …well … they’re calling it a ‘500 year’ flood. I’d believe them. 13 inches in a couple days. Most people locked in some fashion, if not by road or electricity or phone, certainly away from their loved ones.
And I get it. The notice from Adobe. My order is shipping … except there’s several trees and about a ton of mud blocking Dog Creek and the public services are pulled so thin …. if you live on a road with about 10 people, you obligingly go to the end of the line.
No matter. Out in the boonies it’s the community that pulls together anyway.
So the road has been cleared and we’re checking out the aftermath. It is surreal. There are leaves and debris caught up in branches 20 feet over your head. Furniture scattered on each side of the road.
We live by the creek. We always see the high water but this time we turn on the news to find out … it was the entire city and locations you didn’t think were close to water.
And as we survey the damage, check on friends … with a guilty subconscious I’m wondering where the FedEx man may be … what if we ran into him on the road.
Next friend, a little worse than before …. water actually swept through their house … we offer help, drinking water …
and .. I don’t believe … as we’re pulling out, it is the FedEx man. I plead with my wife to turn around .. harmless right ? he might have my package … I mean .. it is CS5 Christmas Eve.
And he does. I explain myself … I don’t normally rush FedEx delivery asking about their route but the whole area is tumbled and he simply smiles saying he understands.
He checks my name on the list and says, Yep, they 82′d yuh. 82′d me … Navy talk ? we were on the skip list, no clear for driving yet.
He laughs, apologizing for the ’shop talk’ and yes, he would have skipped our delivery that day. Dog Creek had not been cleared.
Soooo …. Not exactly what I thought my first flight would be, and
yes the Mercury Engine and Premiere Pro turn my avchd hi def’s into realtime editing ( since I made sure I had a Quadro Nvidia with Cuda )
and I expect to have a lot more fun with my shooting and editing soon, even seems like AE is a bit faster …
but for the first ride out, after my 5 days lock on Dog Creek
